On the 28th November 2021, University Civic Engagement Club (UCEC) a tree maintenance activity at Bandar Tasik Selatan on a plot of reserved land supervised by Kuala Lumpur City Council (DBKL) . A total of 8 student volunteers from International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) and Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia (USIM), joined in on the activity and successfully implemented what they learn from a short tree maintenance workshop conducted beforehand. With a total of 31 trees successfully provided a wooden support by the participants, may they live long and withstand the changes of time and weather.
It all started with a simple introduction to what and why we need to do tree maintenance for newly planted or growing trees. The volunteers then proceeded to their respective trees, accompanied by UCEC facilitators under the warm vibrant sun. Armed with zip wires, hammers, structural wooden poles, and good ol’ fashion muscles, all of the participants managed to stabilize and provide necessary support for all the trees. At the end, all of the participants receive a small plant to be brought home and cared for as part of the 100 Million Tree-Planting Campaign 2021-2025.
To be able to give support and a solid foundation for the trees to grow and prosper will one day be a sweet memory on how one manages to raise a young plant into a big and formidable tree that will protect those near to it. The lessons learnt in this UCEC Tree Maintenance activity of the importance in taking care of a plant, or tree, and also how to take care of it will be beneficial to not only these participants, but also to their environment, in the quest for 100 million trees plant as part of the Greening Malaysia programme.
